    4. Postoperative cautions and care

    1) Activities

    • You have to take bed rest immediately after the operation. You may walk around when you feel better.
    • You may drive and undergo mild exercise and normal activities 1 day after the operation.
    • 3~4 days after the operation, you may undergo mild exercise. However, you may not do severe exercise such as jogging or tennis till 3~4 weeks after the operation. You may increase the exercise intensity gradually.
    • In general, it takes 1~3 days to be back to normal work at the office.

    2) Compression and compression clothes

    • The most important thing in the postoperative management is to leave the excision open and undergo two types of compression (open drainage and bimodal compression) on the lesion. This is to promote the drainage of fluid that was injected during the operation, and to prevent the fluid gathering in the operation site.
    • There are two kinds of compression. At 1~2 days after the operation, relative high-grade compression is undergone and it promotes drainage through incision. After the drainage stops,  low-grade compression maintaining lymphatic capillary is done. In general, for 3-7 days after the operation, it is better to compress for 24 hours a day. It is sufficient to compress by wearing the compression garment.
    • If the incision is rather big, it should be sutured 1 or 2 days after the operation.
    • For 1 month, it is better to wear the compression clothes(garment). For 2 weeks, it is better to wear the compression clothes all day long and for the following next 2 weeks, it is better to wear them for 12~24 hours a day. This helps to support the operation site during working hours and protects it from the external pain sources. In general, it is better to wear it for 2~3 months depending on the amount of aspirated fat.

    3) Scar management and drainage

    • Until 1~2 days after the operation, it is normal that the blood fluid comes out from the excision.
    • Better drainage for 1~2 days after the operation means less bruising and swelling after the operation. Most fluid is drained for 2 days after the operation and it should stop within 1 week. The fluid is mixed with anesthetic and body fluid. If it is tinted with red color, it is mixed with a little blood, which is normal. However, if blood loss is severe, or there is severe swelling or pain, you have to contact us immediately.
    • 2 days after the operation, it is better to wash up the lesion with soap and apply the antibiotics twice a day.
    • 3 days after the operation, you may take a shower and it is necessary to wear the compression clothes immediately after the shower. When you take a shower, you can wash and dry the compression clothes. You are not allowed to enter the bath tub until 3 weeks postoperatively.
    • During drainage, if the pad gets wet, please change the pad.
    • You should leave the lesion open. Do not cover it with bands.
    • Stitch removal is undergone at 7~9 days after the operation.

    4) Pain and bruising

    bruise.jpg

    • During 1 week after the operation, the pain becomes most severe but it becomes alleviated. Mostly, the pain is not so severe, however, if the pain is severe, you may take the Tylenol at the interval of 4~6 hours.
    • The tumescent technique rarely causes bruises and even if there are bruises, they will  disappear within 1~2 weeks.
    • Until 5~10 days after the operation, there remains some swelling. Therefore, it can increase your weight but the swelling will improve sooner or later.

    5) Taking medicine

    • You should take the oral antibiotics that are prescribed.
    • You should avoid Aspirin or Ibuprofen which are not prescribed for 5 days after the operation.

    6) Taking a bath

    • You should only take a shower 3 days after the operation.
    • For several days after the operation, you have to be careful when you take off the compression clothes. If the compression is suddenly released, it can lower the blood pressure and you may fall down. In order to prevent this, you had better take off compression clothes while you are lying down, then, slowly sit up for several minutes. After that you may stand up. You had better lie back down for a while after the shower to redress.
    • Dry up the lesion and apply the ointment.
    • For 3 weeks after the operation, you should not enter swimming pools and beaches.

    7) Meals

    • After the operation, you may drink some water in order to prevent dehydration.
    • Soup is appropriate for the first meal after the operation but you should avoid alcohol or coffee.
    • 6 hours after the operation, you may have an ordinary meal, however, you had better avoid salty or fibrous food.

    8) Outpatient visits

    • 1 days or 2 days after the operation, you have to visit the hospital.
    • After that, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after the operation, you have to visit the hospital. You have to make a reservation for postoperative management.
    • 7 days after the operation, the stitches will be removed and 10 days after the operation, you may be given the postoperative management.
    • After the liposuction, the skin becomes harder, then you may be given the postoperative management with radiofrequency massage.
    • If you are given the postoperative management once or twice a week, the swelling will rapidly recover and tugging sensation will be alleviated.
    • If you are not available to be given the postoperative management, it is better to take a bath with warm water to relieve yourself.
    • But non-postoperative management does not affect the surgical result.
    • You should not judge the final results prematurely.
    • The swelling can be remained from 6 weeks to 6 months.
    • You may feel dullness on your skin but it will improve sooner or later.
    • Do not hesitate to contact us when you have problems or requests. You may consult us through our website.
